Students could be one of the groups that would benefit most from cheap gas rates and reduced electricity bills.

Research by Family Investments shows the cost of living during a spell in education is on the rise, with current expenditure totalling an average of £718 a month - 28 per cent higher than it was in 2004.

The firm also warns that level could increase further and hit £818 a month by 2013, which may leave a number of property dwellers in full-time education feeling the pinch.

Kate Moore, head of savings and investments at the organisation, says: "Higher education is an expensive business and these figures highlight the need to plan finances in advance."

With so many expanding outlays, students may find one way to balance out the pressure of finding the money is by switching their energy supplier and enjoying cheap gas and electricity rates.

It could also be worth taking on board the recent advice from Gordon Miller, sustainability and communications director at Sustain, who said small changes such as adopting energy-efficient light bulbs can make a big difference to bills.
