A switch of energy supplier can result in lower bills and more cash available to stash away in savings accounts.

The importance of this has been highlighted by Wendy von den Hende, chief executive at the Personal Finance Education Group.

She says young people in particular should prioritise saving as soon as possible - perhaps even after getting their first job.

Commenting on youngsters, Ms von den Hende says: "The more they can save up from an early age the better; it's about getting into a habit."

The expert was speaking after research by myvouchercodes.co.uk showed 64 per cent of people as young as 14-17 are worried about building up debt.

But by switching their energy supplier and enjoying cheap gas and electricity rates homeowners of all ages could soon be saving money.

The website's research also found more than a fifth (21 per cent) hope never to have a credit card or loan.
