If the UK's homes are to be in a position to offer cheap gas and cheap electricity, everybody must take responsibility, warns an expert.

Gordon Miller, sustainability and communications director at Sustain, says utilities companies, homeowners and builders must join forces to improve energy efficiency in properties.

He suggests it is "only right" that energy suppliers make an effort to help the country meet its carbon emissions reduction target.

"Appealing to the public on the grounds of the cost is unlikely to gain them much sympathy when energy companies make such huge profits," Mr Miller states.

Another tactic homeowners might employ in a bid to drive down the cost of powering their house is to make a switch of energy supplier, as a rival firm could be prepared to offer a better deal.

Earlier this month, the Energies Technology Institute said a £3 million project to improve energy efficiency in the majority of UK homes was underway.
