Homeowners across the UK have been urged to do a little research before committing to a switch of energy supplier.

Mark Todd, director at energyhelpline.com, said making a rash decision on the spot is a bad move – and one that has proved unsuccessful for between 40 and 50 per cent of those who have agreed to a quick change.

Instead, the expert advises a rational approach is best, with working out which tariff is the right one often a "complex process".

"Never switch on the spot; always take away the quote and double-check it with an independent price comparison service," Mr Todd explains.

Comparing electricity prices on sites such as UK Power before committing to a switch of energy supplier is perhaps the wisest course of action to take.

Mr Todd's advice comes after Ofgem promised to check up on power providers to ensure they are complying with new regulations on signing up customers.
