Deciding on a switch of energy supplier in order to enjoy cheaper gas and electricity bills can be used by homeowners as the first step towards improved financial control.

Financial expert Alvin Hall says this is an admirable quality in Britons, with the recession causing many to rethink how they budget.

Assuming a stronger position on spending and keeping finances in check is a "good thing in a difficult economy", Mr Hall notes.

His words follow research by Southern Electric, conducted by Opinion Matters, which shows many people are now obsessed with their money situation.

It finds 30 per cent admit to being control freaks, while another 34 per cent feel they want total control over their finances.

The average saving by these people is £568, some of which could be made up by a switch of energy supplier that results in cheaper power rates.

"[People] are looking at their situations now and deciding where [they] can cut back," the expert adds.
