Insulating a home is one way to supplement the benefits of a switch of energy supplier and enjoy cheap gas and electricity bills.

Tim Doherty, managing director at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon, says there are several ways people can make their property more efficient.

"Not only can you save money on labour by laying your own insulation, but you can also save money on your fuel bills in the long term," he explains.

Insulation will prevent heat from escaping a house through cracks, gaps and spaces in the walls and roof.

While a switch of energy supplier is an easy way to cut power costs overnight for some people, those looking to drive down invoices even further may be wise to invest in insulation.

Mr Doherty's comments follow research by Oxford University, which suggested smart meters may not be as effective as many people believe.
