People who switch energy suppliers and start saving money on their home power bills could put the excess cash towards a break in Sri Lanka.

Sanjika Perera, UK and Ireland director at the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, says a trip to the Asian island over the festive period is worth considering.

He notes the beaches on the south coast are the best during winter and offer a perfect venue for topping up the tan over Christmas.

But Brits without enough disposable income may find they have to make cuts in other areas if they are to holiday in the country, starting with a switch of energy supplier.

"We are still very much a value for money destination in the Indian Ocean; that is the key reason why people have decided to visit Sri Lanka," adds Mr Perera.

Recent figures from the bureau revealed the number of British visitors to Sri Lanka was up by 43 per cent in August.
