Compare prices

Comparing electricity prices online may be the future for the power market, after one expert warned traditional methods of persuading people to switch energy supplier are outdated.

Mark Todd, co-founder of energyhelpline.com, says tactics such as doorstep selling have contributed to a poor relationship between fuel suppliers and their customers.

He notes firms now need to have a rethink and approach householders in a more organised and professional way.

This could include offering their services via an electricity comparison website, where all the details of a tariff are available in a no-pressure environment.

"Always approach people in a way whereby they're using some kind of authoritive calculator," Mr Todd explains.

Many consumers may currently be on the lookout for a switch of energy supplier, with a recent study by Which? Showing more than one-in-three people do not trust their current provider to give them the best tariff on the market.
