A switch of energy supplier may be one way for householders to lower the amount of cash they pay out each month.

Such a suggestion comes as Darren Cook, head of press and PR at Moneyfacts.co.uk, urged people moving into a new home to work out exactly what a mortgage will cost.

He noted running a home is expensive and the biggest purchase most people will ever make, so it is worth being sure on expenses before committing to it.

One way to make such a move more affordable may be to secure a switch of energy supplier and enjoy cheaper rates with an alternative provider.

Commenting on the mortgage, the expert said: "Do the sums to make sure that you are getting the best deal on the rates side as well as the fees side."

The Council for Mortgage Lenders recently reported gross mortgage lending shrunk by 14 per cent in August compared with July.
