Consumer expectations are one reason that firms should strive to reduce their power consumption and, subsequently, their business energy bills.
Emma Fryer, programme manager at the Intellect Technology Association, says the public has a "growing influence" over organisations.
She notes few will want to be seen as anything but eco-friendly, so doing their bit to help the environment is critical.
In turn, this can benefit the companies in question through a reduction in fuel usage and a resulting drop in the amount they pay for business energy.
Offering an example of one firm that performs its green duties well, Ms Fryer observes: "It's certainly true that companies like Nokia are taking a really strong lead on being environmentally friendly."
She was speaking after the publication of the latest Greenpeace Guide to Green Electronics, which rated the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer and its rival Sony Ericsson as the best developers of environmental policy.
