More people may compare electricity prices following government announcements yesterday (March 23rd), as an expert has warned that tariffs may rise.

Volker Beckers, chief executive of RWE npower, reacted to the introduction of a bottom charge for carbon of £16 per tonne from 2013, noting that it is higher than was originally presented.

In his speech yesterday, chancellor George Osborne said the cost would rise to £30 in the year 2020 and the move would encourage investment in the framework of the nation's energy infrastructure.

However, Mr Beckers disagreed and asserted that there will be a five-year wait before new low carbon generation begins. He added that the Treasury has predicted a rise of £6 per year in home energy bills from 2013, which could increase to £17 in 2016.

Mr Osborne made reassurances that the government would monitor the prices consumers face, following the Ofgem review that was published on Monday (March 21st).
