Homeowners considering a switch of energy supplier may wish to look at installing a timer in their home before they do so, as fitting such a device to regulate temperature has been proven to save money.

Researchers in New Zealand found households that use heated towel-rails in their bathrooms spend around NZ$175 (£85) each year to keep them running around the clock.

Stuart Ross from the country's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority said decreasing usage to eight hours a day could provide annual savings of up to NZ$115, adding becoming more efficient does not mean sacrificing usage but is "about doing things in a smarter way".

Last week, Dr Michael Pollit from the Cambridge Judge Business School's Electricity Policy Research Group spoke on the institution's podcast, explaining that turning down the thermostat can be more effective than fitting double glazed windows.

He suggested such fixtures are "quite expensive in terms of the savings of energy".
