Energy saving is an important issue for contact centres, but ensuring this is enacted depends on concerted design and action, an expert has said.

Chief executive and co-founder of market research and analysis firm Macarthur Stroud International Hamish Macarthur said the issue of saving business energy is a concern for every firm with a data centre as it looks at its costs.

However, he noted: "It is when there are pressures on energy supply or when new data centres are being deployed that architecture and design considerations will focus on energy usage and energy savings are maximised."

This may be of interest to firms planning to build new contact centres and seeking to take decisions over their priorities when it comes to the design of such buildings.

Mr Macarthur's comments follow the publication of a report by Greenpeace last month stating that many contact centres are falling short when it comes to energy efficiency.

It accused the industry of failing to recognise the benefits of using renewable energy.
