Homeowners looking to save money on their car could be encouraged to switch energy supplier and purchase an electric vehicle, after British Gas announced a new offer.
In 2012, its customers will be able to take advantage of a new tariff that will allow them to power their motor during the night using off-peak charges that are less expensive.
However, this summer, up to 150 early applicants will be able to road-test the scheme and receive a discount in return. The company said it will use this period to understand how effective the plan may be.
Managing director of British Gas Smart Homes Dean Keeling said the supplier will offer homeowners as much assistance as possible, in order to make it "hassle-free" to run an electric car.
Furthermore, those who sign up will be given greater priority in receiving a smart meter, as well as advice on how to reduce their carbon footprint.
Last month, the firm installed the first household charging point, which takes eight hours to fill up the lithium-ion battery in a Nissan Leaf.
