People looking to switch energy supplier could have a new option to choose from, as the Co-op group's entry into the market has been welcomed by Consumer Focus.

Audrey Gallacher, from the watchdog, expressed high expectations for the newcomer, giving particular approval to the company's claim that it will make price plans easier for homeowners to understand.

"We hope the firm will live up to its commitment to give its customers a fair deal," she said.

Last year, the new organisation was set up as part of the Midcounties Co-operative, which has 430,000 members. However, it will be a service that is available to the rest of Great Britain.

Ms Gallacher observed that the majority of the industry is currently run by half a dozen companies - which include British Gas and npower - and this move by the Co-op could benefit a lot of people.

"Greater consumer choice will lead to improvements for customers across the board," she stated.
