Landlords utilising business electricity in their properties are to gain "additional certainty" from the Green Deal.

This is according to John Alker, director of policy and communications for the UK Green Building Council, who recently welcomed an announcement making energy efficiency a legal requirement among property owners supplying their tenants with commercial gas and electricity.

He claimed that the legislation will place a "stronger emphasis" on the need for landlords to renovate their properties.

"Also, although it's slightly counter intuitive it actually provides a bit of additional certainty for landlords, because they know they have to do this," said Mr Alker.

The industry figure went on to suggest that the announcement would also provide greater clarification on the coalition's stance on its green housing policy.

Energy secretary Chris Huhne unveiled the new measures at the second reading of the Energy Bill on May 10th.

He outlined new rules, which mean landlords will be legally obliged to meet a minimum level of energy efficiency as of 2016.
