UK firms looking to reduce their business energy costs might be interested in an advice guide from the Carbon Trust.

The organisation noted that small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that sign up to adhere to its emission standards could save around £2,000 each year, as well as cutting CO2 output by 13 tonnes.

As part of the online tool, managers will be able to find out how they can accurately report how much power they use, shape company policies regarding consumption and become accredited.

Harry Morrison, from the authority, noted that SMEs can play an important role in helping the UK meet its 2020 carbon targets, which are to cut output by 34 per cent.

"What you can measure, you can reduce," he said, before adding that achieving recognition from the scheme would provide a "major opportunity" for a lot of businesses.

Earlier this year, pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline was given the first global climate change award from the Carbon Trust, after reducing its footprint by four per cent over 65 countries.
