Millions of families are to face crippling energy bills after one supplier revealed massive price rises yesterday.

Scottish Power  revealed electricity charges will jump 10% and gas by a staggering 19% on August 1 – an increase for some of almost £200.

Now British Gas, E.ON, npower, EDF Energy and Scottish & Southern Energy are widely expected to follow suit.

The company, which made £1.15billion profit last year, blamed the move on rising wholesale energy costs which have jumped 30% in the past year.

Raymond Jack, Scottish Power's UK retail director, said: “We understand times are difficult for many people and we have done what we can to absorb these additional costs for as long as possible.”
