A leading energy expert says Scotland will not only fail in its drive to switch to 100% renewable energy by 2020, but it could double the cost of energy for customers.

Professor Ian Fells, from the University of Newcastle, told the Daily Telegraph that he believed Scotland would only manage a maximum of 40% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.

He was speaking after Scottish Power announced huge price-hikes on gas and electricity prices would be introduced in August - with gas prices alone rising by 19%.

Professor Fells said Scotland's claim to be able to turn to 100% green energy by 2020 was over-ambitious and meant customers would struggle to find cheap gas and electricity.

He believes off-shore wind farms would be expensive to build and warned that energy customers could foot the bill, pointing out that green subsidies had already been added to energy bills by stealth.
