As energy prices have increased, the number of people getting into debt with their energy suppliers has also risen. According to an article published by BBC News, in excess of 1.5 million people have got into debt with their suppliers this year.

To combat the problem Consumer Focus and Citizens' Advice have got together to launch a new awareness campaign - providing people with information about what to do should they find themselves in a problematic position.

Entitled 'Plug the Debt', the campaign will also remind consumers of the ways in which they can save energy.

Consumer Focus chief executive, Mike O'Connor, commented on the launch of the campaign.

He said: "We want people to know that help is out there. Your supplier has to help you if you have problems affording your bills and there are discounts and grants available to help you lower your costs.

"We'd urge people to get in touch with their energy firm as soon as they think they might have problems before debts start to spiral," O'Connor added.
