Co-operative Energy reaches 100% renewable target

Although a relatively new name in the energy market, Co-operative Energy has revealed that 100 per cent of the electricity it supplied to customers during its first year of operation was sourced from renewable sources.
Earlier this year the company announced that it was sourcing in excess of 94 per cent of its energy from generators of renewable energy. Now it has surpassed that mark with the use of energy from wind, biomass and hydro sources, GreenWise has reported.
Despite reaching this landmark, Co-operative Energy has always been wary of classing itself as one of the UK's green energy suppliers since it's launch in May last year (2011).
Commenting on the achievement, the firm's business development manager, Nigel Mason, stated: "We have remained very committed to playing our part in tackling climate change since our launch a year ago. At launch, we made a public pledge to ensure that, by April 2012, the carbon content of our electricity would be less than half the national average.
"It's a great achievement to source our electricity entirely from renewable sources, especially in our first year as an energy provider.
"As we grow, we will have to stay open-minded about sourcing our electricity from non-renewable generators, whilst choosing renewable wherever possible. We believe that a multi-pronged approach to energy supply is needed if the UK is to meet its climate change targets in the medium term."
