Introduced back in 2011, the Warm Home Discount Scheme is one aimed at helping those most vulnerable with paying their electricity bills during the cold winter months.
Those that qualify for the scheme are provided with £130, which they can put towards their electricity bills.
Although most people are already aware of this, many aren't aware of how the Warm Home Discount Scheme actually works.
It can be broken down into four bullet points:
- Who runs it? The scheme was introduced by the government but is paid for and funded by the electricity suppliers participating in it.
- How do they know who's eligible? Participating suppliers and the Department for Work and Pensions share a limited amount of information about their customers. By doing this the suppliers can determine which of their customers they can automatically give the discount to.
- When will those eligible get their discount? Eligible customers will receive their discount for 2012/2013 by February 2013. These customers will also receive a letter confirming that they're eligible.
- How long is the scheme going to run for? The Warm Home Discount Scheme is expected run for a total of four years - having commenced in winter 2011/2012.
