The UK Government recently set a target to install smart meters in every home by 2020. It is through the use of smart metering technology that first: utility can empower consumers to manage their own energy consumption and bills, therefore helping customers understand and manage their energy consumption, reduce their carbon footprint, and ensuring that they receive accurate bills.

First Utility are rolling out smart meters region by region, starting with home owners in the Midlands and East Midlands regions, with the rest of the UK to follow throughout 2010.
