However the men, who originate from across the world, are not thought to be connected with al-Qaida or any other named terrorist group.
Four of the men were born in the former Yugoslavia while one suspect is said to be from Turkey. The sixth man is said to be Jordanian.
"There is no evidence that they received direction from international terror organisations," revealed White House spokesperson Tony Snow.
"However their involvement in weapons training, operational surveillance and discussions about killing American military personnel warranted a strong law enforcement response."
It is thought that the men trained themselves in using weapons in the Pocono mountains in Pennsylvania.
However US officials claim the attack was stopped while the men were still in the planning phase. The men were arrested by FBI officers in Cherry Hill, around 20 miles from the military base yesterday evening.
"They were plotting to make an assault on Fort Dix with the intention of killing as many US soldiers as possible," claimed Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the US attorney in Newark, New Jersey.
All six men are due to appear in court to face terrorism charges in Camden, New Jersey.
