Consumers in Europe will face the same difficulties as their counterparts in Britain unless effective protection measures are put in place when their energy markets open, a leading UK consumer champion has said.

Energywatch says that the opening up of the energy markets in the UK caused a number of problems - many of which are still yet-to-be resolved.

"The problems suffered by British energy consumers are not a closely guarded secret," Allan Asher, chief executive of energywatch said.

"When Britain's energy market liberalised it was assumed it was in suppliers' interests to sell their products responsibly, transfer new customers smoothly and bill their customers accurately and regularly.

"Unfortunately for consumers, these assumptions proved to be mistaken, and we are still trying to sort out many of these problems a decade later," he added.

From July 1st, every consumer across Europe will have a choice of gas or electricity supplier - as the EU attempts to give every European the right to choose who provides them with their energy.
