Business customers can also expect one per cent increases on their bills, while small and medium-sized enterprises can expect a tariff decrease of 2.8 per cent.
Discussing the price increases, NIE spokeswoman Kerstie Forsyth said the decision was taken to reflect higher wholesale energy prices in the market since April.
She explained: "This lower than inflation increase should be viewed against the cut in prices of three per cent applied from April 2007.
"NIEs domestic electricity prices remain eight per cent below those of the Electricity Supply Board in the south and in line with those in GB comparator regions."
NIE is a subsidiary of the Viridian Group, which includes Energia, Huntstown and Powerteam.
The company was formed in 1973 and has connections with ScottishPower through their joint management of the Moyle Interconnector.
