The UK's gas supplies for the winter months are to receive a boost thanks to the opening of a new Norwegian gasfield.

Minister for competitiveness Stephen Timms was at the opening of the new fuel source on Norway's west coast, which will be connected directly to Britain via a pipeline which runs to Yorkshire.

It is expected that the new supply will provide around 20 per cent of the UK's gas in the forthcoming months, while the link-up has also secured more energy supplies for consumption across Britain.

Mr Timms said: "This marks the culmination of years of work, overcoming the toughest engineering challenges, to get more Norwegian gas to the UK than ever before. It is a tribute to the close relationship between the UK and Norway."

The government's move to secure new gas supplies has come after a dispute between Russia and the Ukraine over the fuel raised concerns that energy costs in the UK could rise in the next few months.
