Holiday insurance 'a necessity'

Holiday and travel insurance is a necessity for all people planning a trip abroad, regardless of what they plan to do, according to Halifax.

The bank made the comment after its research found that while around 2.5 million Brits take a package holiday to exotic locations every year, the average person only spends around seven hours outside of their hotel.

It was also found that a large number of tourists never attempt to speak the local language, while 70 per cent also do not visit local attractions.

Paul Birkhead, senior underwriting manager at Halifax Travel Insurance, said that people who do stay within a hotel complex for the duration of their stay should not think they do not need cover.

He explained: "People intending to stay in the confines of the resort will still need cover as accidents can happen by the pool, your luggage can still go missing or your holiday can be cut short for unforeseen reasons."

STA Travel, a specialist travel company for students and young people, recently stated that travel insurance was an "absolute must" for people heading on gap years.
