Tennis fans in the UK have been urged to ensure they have accidental damage cover if they plan to show off their racquet skills in the next few weeks.

Recent figures released by Halifax Home Insurance found that the number of claims related to broken windows and glass breakage rose by 18 per cent in June last year when compared to the previous January.

It was found that people in Solihull and south-east Birmingham were the most likely to claim for such damage.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance, said: "During the summer months we often notice an increase in claims for broken windows and other accidental breakages.

"We'd advise any budding Murrays and Sharapovas to take care when playing ball sports close to home, and check they are insured for accidental damage should a mishap occur."

Recent research by Sainsbury's Bank found that the average insurance claim made for garden thefts in the UK stood at just under £300 in 2007.
