The study states the popularity for PMI has risen to 40 per cent, while demand for pension plans dropped by six per cent.
The figures leave a nine per cent shortfall between PMI and pension demand, meaning the former is now the most sought after employee benefit.
Ann Greenwood, director business markets for BUPA Health Insurance said: "The rising popularity of workplace health benefits, particularly PMI, reflects changing attitudes to personal healthcare."
She added employees now want "more control over healthcare" and "faster access to specialists" rather than being stuck on waiting lists for long periods of time
Meanwhile, it was recently claimed many workers do not know if they have life insurance cover, according to research by Aon Consulting, reports website employeebenefits.co.uk.
