Young people who are heading to university in the coming month have been urged to see if their belongings may be covered by their parents' home insurance policy.

Research by Sainsbury's found that a third of standard products cap cover for students living away from home at £3,750 or less, while 11 policies only provide insurance of up to £1,000.

It was also revealed that one in four insurance policies do not cover people who are studying away from home.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's home insurance manager, said it is "really essential" that students have appropriate cover in place.

He added: "The average student will have possessions that would cost thousands of pounds to replace if they were burgled, which the vast majority of students just could not afford."

The Association of British Insurers recently urged motorists to ensure they shop around when looking for car insurance.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the body, said consumers could make a "significant saving" by comparing deals.
