Scandalous fuel poverty levels in the UK must be tackled with grass-roots energy efficiency initiatives it has been claimed.

In response to the Energy Efficiency and Jobs report commissioned by Greenpeace, the chief executive of Consumer Focus Ed Mayo said: "A major energy efficiency scheme targeted at the poorest homes is essential if our scandalous fuel poverty levels are to be tackled.

"Without action now all consumers, especially the poorest, will pay a heavy price in the future."

He added that support for the poorest homes would not just life millions out of fuel poverty and benefit the environment, it would put billions of pounds into the economy by generating new jobs.

Mr Mayo claimed the government's current approach is inadequate as it has rejected the recent Fuel Poverty Bill.

The Greenpeace report called for a major energy efficiency drive to be an integral part of any future fiscal stimulus package.
