Smart meters can provide users with a detailed breakdown of the electricity they use.
Recent research shows that providing customers with the extra information encourages them to turn off appliances when they are not in use.
General Electric's general manager of its London 2012 projects team Tony Gale said: "It's how you use the information from smart meters to change people's behaviour, rather than the installation of the meters themselves, which is interesting."
Meanwhile, GE Lighting has just won an award for its Vio high-power white LEDs.
The company outshone rivals in the Light Sources and Controls category at the Lighting Design Awards, with what the judges referred to as a "major advance in colour stability".
