Homes in the private rented sector are not usually the most energy efficient on the property market.

And with renters often reluctant to carry out home improvements on property they don't own, the best way to improve efficiency and reduce energy bills in rented accommodation is by switching energy supplier.

Despite the government's key advisory body on energy saving, the Energy Saving Trust, claiming it is willing to come down hard on landlords and ensure they offer energy efficient properties to would-be tenants, little actual action is being taken.

So consumers should take matters into their own hands and hunt down the cheapest energy tariff they can by comparing energy prices online.

The Energy Saving Trust said: "We would like to see the authorities use environmental health regulations to tackle the really badly insulated homes."

Adding: "We need a powerful incentive to act as a backstop in case other measures do not work."

But at the moment this is all just talk.

Meanwhile, new research by the Energy Saving Trust shows that households in the London borough of Enfield are throwing away £4.5 million a year in wasted energy.
