More than half of respondents said that even after the economy returns to normal they will continue to try to spend less on energy.
Justin Sargent, managing director of Nielson, said: "It seems that consumers have implemented a number of strategies to stay within their budgets and they intend to persist with some of these even when times become easier. This foray into a more frugal way of life for some may well turn out to be something that shapes lifestyles for many years to come."
The survey questioned over 25, 000 people online to gauge how the recession is affecting spending.
This comes at the same time as consumer group Which? issued its latest advice saying that autumn is the best time to consider changing energy provider.
