Households are enjoying cheaper gas and electricity following an Ofgem investigation into tariffs set by energy companies.

As a result of the work carried out by the organisation, unjustified premium rates have been reduced and the average cost of a prepayment meter has fallen by 40 per cent.

There are also benefits to those mulling over the prospect of switching energy supplier, with the process now said to be considerably easier thanks to annual statements and enhanced bills.

"We want customers to have a much better picture of their energy consumption and how much they are spending. Clearer bills and annual statements will put all this information at their fingertips," states Sarah Harrison, senior partner in sustainable development at Ofgem.

The reform has also brought cheaper gas and electricity to some 4.3 million people, many in rural areas who could not enjoy cost-effective dual-fuel rates because they are not part of the national gas network.

One part of the UK that could benefit more than most is Birmingham, after the city council admitted plans to reduce carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2026, which could have a positive effect on energy bills.
