Finding a deal with a cheap dual fuel supplier is one way for customers to attempt to lower the amount they pay for their energy each month.

At the moment, a "cocktail of costs" could be pushing up the price of heating and lighting buildings across the UK.

Consumer Focus is urging Ofgem to ensure customers are not asked to simply write a "blank cheque" to fund improvements to the country's energy network.

The organisation admits advancements are needed as the UK strives to be more efficient, but the costs involved are huge and should not be met entirely by the public.

One way to offset any charges for upgrades to the national energy system may be to sign up to a deal with a cheap dual fuel supplier that offers electricity and gas at a favourable rate.

Latest statistics from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development show the cost of energy in the UK rose by 4.8 per cent in the year to August 2010.
