Homeowners who make an effort to turn their property into an energy-efficient building that benefits from cheap gas and electricity bills should find it is worth more when they come to sell it.

Anwar Harland-Khan, chief executive at Sustain Worldwide, says demand for such homes will "undoubtedly increase" over the next few years.

In fact, he goes as far as suggesting there will be a "premium" price tag attached to buildings that look after the environment.

One way to drive down monthly invoices is to carry out a switch of energy supplier, but it may also be worth adding insulation to reduce power consumption.

Commenting on the factors that will make energy-efficient homes more valuable, Mr Anwar-Khan says: "This will create an upper tier in housing and second home specs, which in turn will carry a premium."

Knight Frank recently released a report that concluded UK builders are happy to meet government requirements on green properties, but require further education on the proposed zero carbon directive.
