People do not need to make a huge effort or spend a significant sum of money on their home in order to enjoy cheap gas bills almost instantly.

The Miami Herald documents the case of Jodie Mekled, who had her property renovated by Habitat for Humanity.

Among the actions carried out by the organisation was the spraying of walls with cellulose in order to insulate them and prevent heat from escaping.

Experts also added bamboo flooring, for similar reasons, with Ms Mekled's gas and electricity bills falling almost instantly.

"I love the bathroom. I love my kitchen," the homeowner tells the newspaper, illustrating such improvements can be not only financially but also stylistic.

Brandon McCullough, of Habitat for Humanity, adds low-cost energy-efficient tactics are now becoming common in a bid to create cheap gas bills.

James Murray, editor of BusinessGreen.com, this week suggested the UK government needs to do more to make buildings greener.
