There are many steps householders can take in the midst of autumn to ensure they enjoy the cheapest gas bills when the cold weather sets in.

While a switch of energy provider may be an obvious step for some of those hoping to pay a lower tariff, improving the efficiency of a building can also work wonders. advises people to first plug the leaks and gaps in their home that may be allowing energy to escape, resulting in more power being used to heat and light a property.

It goes on to note keeping a boiler at its best may also pay off, with clearing out the filters one possible method.

And investing in a thermostat that allows the temperature to automatically be reduced at times of day when heat is not required - such as in the middle of the day and at night – is another recommended action.

The advice may be of use to many of the four million Britons said to be living in fuel poverty, according to recent figures from Friends of the Earth.
