Firms may find their business energy bills start to decrease in size after they sign up to the Carbon Reduction Label project.

The sticker forces companies to display exactly what effect they are having on the environment.

A spokesman for The Food Ethics Council suggests: "Carbon labelling prompts participating businesses to clean up their act - nobody wants a sticker with a bad mark on their product."

The Carbon Trust has announced some £2 billion worth of goods bearing the stamp are now sold in the UK annually.

Indeed, such is the mark's prominence, nine-out-of-ten households have at some point bought an item bearing the logo.

Although stricter rules will be needed to enforce a low-emissions society, the expert adds the scheme has at least made a start on reducing business energy consumption.

He also says consumers remain unaffected by the label's presence - perhaps indicating the pressure on firms to adhere is not as high as it could be.
