It notes home fuel charges are due to rise over the coming months, with Scottish & Southern Energy having already announced a 9.4 per cent hike.
But comparing electricity and gas online can save up to 27 per cent – or £231 on an average household power bill – compared with standard prices.
As well as using a comparison site and making a switch of energy supplier, individuals still have steps they can take to pay less – including turning the thermostat down, switching appliances off and washing clothes at a lower temperature.
Audrey Gallacher, head of energy at Consumer Focus, this week urged people to check they are on the best deal for them.
