Homeowners under financial pressure will find comparing electricity prices online allows them to save money this winter, according to one newspaper.

A report by the Daily Mail suggests tariffs can be significantly lower when secured on the internet rather than over the phone or in person.

It notes home fuel charges are due to rise over the coming months, with Scottish & Southern Energy having already announced a 9.4 per cent hike.

But comparing electricity and gas online can save up to 27 per cent – or £231 on an average household power bill – compared with standard prices.

As well as using a comparison site and making a switch of energy supplier, individuals still have steps they can take to pay less – including turning the thermostat down, switching appliances off and washing clothes at a lower temperature.

Audrey Gallacher, head of energy at Consumer Focus, this week urged people to check they are on the best deal for them.
