The coalition government is to safeguard electricity prices in order to protect the business energy expenses of firms around the country.

It hopes this will persuade many, safe in the knowledge their tariff will not surge uncontrollably, to splash out on next-generation forms of low-carbon power production technology, reports the BBC.

Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne will outline the plans to parliament later today (December 16th).

He says an average £500 annual fuel bill is set to increase by £160 over the next 20 years, but this would be £190 without the measures he is putting in place.

The minister promises his proposal will "remove the risks of being buffeted by oil and gas [price] shocks" for business energy users, explains the news source.

Consumer Focus this week suggested cuts to the government's Warm Front scheme will see thousands of homes go without the heating they require in years to come.
