An industry organisation has warned of the danger of forcing British homeowners to write a "blank cheque" to fund improvements in green power – a situation that could be mitigated by comparing electricity online.

While the body welcomes the chance to offer guidance to the government on its reform of the electricity market, it says this should not be paid for directly out of the public's pockets.

"Cutting our carbon emissions and improving our energy supply is clearly essential but will come with a big price tag. Consumers can't be expected to write a blank cheque to fund this," notes Audrey Gallacher, head of energy at Consumer Focus.

She suggests the cost of development in the sector can have a habit of feeding down to customers.

One way to perhaps soften the blow is to compare electricity prices online and secure the cheapest tariff.

Consumer Focus recently said it fears the government's decision to make cutbacks on its Warm Front scheme will leave thousands of households struggling to heat their properties.
