Pensioners in the UK will soon have alternative options to a switch of energy supplier when it comes to trying to drive down the cost of their power bills.

Energy and climate change minister Lord Marland told the House of Lords recently that a green plan will trigger security and financial benefits.

The Energy Bill, which was supported unanimously to win a second reading in parliament, will seek to provide households with a "stable and predictable market".

Lord Marland stated: "The Green Deal will help reduce energy bills for the long term and make our houses more energy efficient."

It could work particularly well in conjunction with a switch of energy supplier, as both factors offer homeowners – including pensioners – a way of reducing their monthly outgoings.

Mike O'Connor CBE, chief executive of Consumer Focus, recently expressed doubts about the Green Deal, noting it has yet to address the fears and problems experiences by British customers.
