However, it notes there are still several "major concerns" surrounding the technology, which can be used to keep track of energy consumption.
"Suppliers must make sure that customers retain the privacy they want and the ability to switch easily to tariffs that work for them. We want to see firms rise to this challenge," states the organisation's energy expert Zoe McLeod.
She adds it is also a wise move to give customers the power to refuse a smart meter until certain regulations have been introduced.
Maria Wardrobe, director of communications at National Energy Action, recently told Britons they can improve their energy efficiency by making changes to their behaviour at home.
