A switch of energy supplier may put households in a position to save money on their fuel bills and improve their health over the winter months.

The UK Public Health Association says some of the charges implemented by power firms in the country are unfair and can even be responsible for deaths, as individuals cannot afford to heat their homes at the coldest times of the year.

"What's happening in a lot of these houses is that you'll have an elderly person, perhaps a widow on their own on a low pension, struggling to keep the house warm," explains the organisation's chairman professor John Ashton.

He goes on to note many of the most vulnerable homeowners keep just one room warm, so when they move away from it the change in temperature has a negative impact on their body.

Each year, about 30,000 people die in Britain because of cold temperatures in homes.

More tips on how to reduce bills was recently handed out by the Association of Residential Letting Agents, which said adding insulation to buildings is vital.
