Some of the poorest households in the UK could still turn to a switch of energy suppliers, despite the arrival of a new government project to lower fuel bills.

That is the view of Consumer Focus, which warns the energy bill discount scheme is not being targeted at the people who need it most.

New research by the organisation has found the Warm Home Discount will bypass 1.5 million individuals who are in need of it most.

While it welcomes the scheme – which is designed to slash bills by £130 for low-income customers – the body says more must be done to ensure the benefits are enjoyed by everybody and not only pensioners, who qualify automatically.

At the moment, it will be left to dual fuel providers to decide where they will be handed out and to whom.

Jonathan Stearn, energy expert at Consumer Focus, states: "The Warm Home Discount scheme will help to reduce these risks, but it should aim to cover all those who need help the most, not just older people on low incomes."

The government also has plans in place for its Green Deal scheme.
