Homeowners have been advised of a few simple steps they can take to reduce the amount of money they pay dual fuel providers each month.

Bina Brown, writing for the Sydney Morning Herald, explained switching appliances off when they are not being used and installing energy-efficient light bulbs can go a long way.

She went on to suggest washing clothes in cold water and adding insulation to ceilings and walls in a bid to limit the loss of heat.

In particular, the use of hot water is something to keep an eye on, as it is believed to be responsible for between 25 and 40 per cent of a home's fuel consumption.

Ms Brown highlighted the heating of water as a huge potential loss of power and money, so some people could target this area in order to lower bills.

Zoe McLeod, energy expert at Consumer Focus, last week recommended energy-efficient light bulbs, suggesting they can be the key to making savings.
