Energy supplier npower has encouraged customers to consider an electric car after it unveiled a new initiative for home charging points at this month's Ideal Home Show.

It is one of several exhibits by the company that could prompt people to switch energy suppliers and lower carbon emissions. The household charge points are being shown off by the new Tesla, named the world's fastest electric car.

Nicola Hadcroft, creative services manager at npower, said: "It's one of many new products being introduced to the market that is soon to become a standard fixture in our homes."

Last week, the AA reported petrol prices rising to £6 a litre because of unrest in the Middle East and warned drivers will have to manage where they can.

Ms Hadcroft said these plans intend to show how energy is becoming more sustainable.

This year marks the ten-year anniversary of npower's renewable energy scheme Juice and new customers are being offered a £100 discount.
